GP Technical Airlift Notes - Day 2 - What, more SharePoint?

Configuring Business Portal

Eric Gjerdevig, MCT, MCP - egjerdevig@summitgroupsoftware.com

Joe Tews, MCT, MCP - jtews@summitgroupsoftware.com

Why Business Portal as opposed to just building a Sharepoint site?

  • Sharepoint doesn't have an understanding of multiple companies
  • Sharepoint doesn't understand what an invoice is, what a check is - what an employee is.
  • Business Portal has pre-defined roles that provide group level security.

What is needed to run BP in an Extranet?

  • ISA Server
  • SSL
  • Recommended - Multiple web servers / farms for internal / external access. Allows different functionality to be applied to each - more features for internal, limited for external.

Adding Users Manually

  • BP Role (MBF - Microsoft Business Framework)
  • Site Setting / Users
  • Pick a Task / Add new user
  • Assign Roles
  • Sharepoint Security
  • Open Sharepoint Security
  • Add user to BP Internal User (ALWAYS!) at a minimum
  • Assign to any other groups (that correspond with the roles assigned above)
  • Web Services Rights
  • Use Dynamics Security Console and add the user to the appropriate Web Services security role based on the roles assigned during the BP role assignment
Adding Users (the smart way)
  • Open the Security Sync Tool
  • Provide a name for the sync rule (MBF Admin to Sharepoint Admin)
  • Select Source (Business Portal - MBF), Company (all), Role (administrator)
  • Choose the same for the destination - Destination (Web Services)

Example:

Rule 1 -  MBF Sales Manager => Sharepoint Sales Manager

Rule 2 - MBF Sls Mgr => Business Framework (Web Services) Sls Mgr

Rule 3 - MBF Sls Mgr => ??????

!! - Rules are stored as an XML document that can be re-used.

Why use separate rule sets rather than multiple set.

If adding users in multiple locations, can cause security risks where users accidentally get added to groups they shouldn't be when added at a single location. Create mapping file for MBF => Business Framework and a separate mapping for Business Framework => MBF

Even after all the synchronization above, users need to be connected to their Back Office ID (employee record) in Advanced Roles

Implementation Methodology

There is a HUGE difference between installing Business Portal and implementing Business Portal.

Discovering what the customer needs added to and also what needs to be removed from BP is as important as installing it. Customization turns BP from a product that is feature rich but never used to a business critical tool.

Creating a new page
  • Site Actions / Create / Business Portal Web Part Page
  • Copy page URL in order to add to Navigation
  • Site Settings / Navigation
  • Add URL to page into site navigation
  • Browse to page
  • Add Business Portal web part (primary publishing list - 1)
    • Configure - create new query
  • Add BP web part (Rich List Result Viewer - 2)
    • Configure - create new query
  • Add publishing information to 1
  • Add subscription information to 2
  • Edit object 2, subscribe to object 1 to establish the link

SQL Report Layout and Design

Model - set of parameters used in a report (tables, links, etc)

Components:

  • Report Designer
  • Report Builder
  • Model Designer
  • Report Manager

Planning a report

  1. Review existing reports
  2. Plan the repot layout
  3. Determine tables
  4. Determine data source
  5. Determine SQL statement or stored procedure (stored proc may be more efficient)
  6. Identify grouping
  7. Determine filtering, sorting
  8. Determine calculated fields, aggregate fields
  9. Create and save report
  10. Deploy the report, set security

Creating a new SQL Report

  • Open Report Designer
  • New Report
  • Set Data Source by clicking link on report
  • Build query in query designer
  • Query brings in fields available to the report
  • Insert report object (table, matrix, chart, gauge, list)
  • Format and publish the report

New Features in SQL 2008 Reporting Svcs

  • Enhanced report designer
  • Tablix data format (multiple groupings on the same row)

    • Live Customers
    • Longest GP Beta period ever
    • ISV drops throughout
  • v10 was focused around the technology platforms. Now that this has been accomplished, version 11 will be highly focused on internal functionality. Release date is planned for 2010.
  • Vendor Approval and action based Workflow steps, not just approval only
  • New hierarchy feature in Office 14
  • Vendor Portal !
  • Contact - Chad Sogge (Security conversation)

Q & A

Now that Project Green is dead, what comes after 2013?

Releases are going to continue, integration of other products will continue, particularly products in the next 2 years. Plan on GP v12.

What is being done to scale GP to compete with such as PeopleSoft?

PeopleSoft is a hot market. PS customers are jumping ship and there are huge opportunities out there.

Focusing on payroll and HR to match up with PS functionality. Recent benchmarks of 50,000 payroll checks and 20,000 W2 forms. Continuing to expand SQL clustering capabilities.

140 customers over a $$ Billion in revenue

Many customers are moving up-market, many partners are following. This feature pack is focused back at the small market, next focus will be up-market.

Will capability be added to Dexterity for some of the new reporting features?

We don't know yet, don't have an answer as to timeline.

Will there be a release of source code for DEX?

Probably not going to happen.

Portal products coming up. Customer and Vendor Portals. What is the direction on convergence/ divergence of portal products?

Sharepoint is the first place we look at for new development. Homepage in Dex will have the same components in 11.

Graphing and data presentation will be componentized where it can be built once and deployed across many locations - homepage, bp and other portals.

There will not be a single drop and replace of the interface to take advantage of new functionality. This will happen over time.

There are 40,000 customers on GP. We will not take away big blocks of functionality. Implementing BP and Sharepoint today will not be a wasted effort when the next version arrives. It will be added and extended, not replaced.

Any plans for supporting products on 64-bit platforms?

GP 11 is planned to be 64-bit compatible, NOT OPTIMIZED for 64 for ALL components (includes BP?)

Windows Live Accounts in Sharepoint

Hold your hands up, everyone. Now put them down if you've never used a browser. OK, lost one.

Now, put them down if you've never used a browser to access a Sharepoint site. Wow, lost a lot there.

M'kay, now put them down if you've ever built or administered a sharepoint site. Anyone left? Oh, there's a few in the corner.

Now, put them down if you've never thought - "Gee, I wish I could authenticate users on my Sharepoint site without having to give them an account on my domain". Where'd the hands go. Woohoo, still got one. This article is for you - yes, you in the shirt.

Codeplex.com now has, in the Community Kit for SharePoint, a Windows Live Authentication feature that you can install and enable the use of Windows Live ID's to your sharepoint site. Kinda cool, huh?

Customizing Instant Search in Vista

Instant search is the new search field in the Start menu in Vista. It allows you to hit the Windows key on your keyboard and immediately start typing. As you type, Instant Search begins to filter through items on the start menu and any other indexed locations such as email and your My Documents folder to find related items.

VistaSearch

Did you know, however, that you can add additional search locations to the search results. For instance, I use Wikipedia frequently to get quick information about topics. I'd like to add that to my search results window.

  • Press Windows Key + R and type gpedit.msc. Click OK to open the local Group Policy Editor on your Vista machine.
  • Open the User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Instant Search\Custom Instant Search Internet Search provider policy setting
  • Enable the policy setting, type Search Wikipedia in the first textbox and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%w in the second textbox, and click OK
  • Open a command prompt and type gpupdate/force to immediately apply the new policy setting.

Now, when you click the start button and search for Crazy Frog you'll have a new search option immediately above the search box

Search Wikipedia

Happy searching!

Wireless Internet using my Cellphone

Think your phone is good for nothing more than making calls and sending text message? Well think again. There's a whole world of capabilities out there that can really kick your "inner geek" up a notch.

Just today, I setup my cellphone to act like a modem for my laptop - no wires required!

I've got the Cingular (now AT&T) 8125. A decent device (crappy phone) but it has all of the 'extras' I need like wireless internet, wifi and bluetooth.

Here's how I accomplished it -

Turn on bluetooth on the 8125 and set it to discoverable mode. Turn on bluetooth on your laptop and pair with the phone. You'll end up with a bluetooth modem available.

Open your network connections and create a new dialup connection using the bluetooth modem.

IMPORTANT: Use phone number *99#

Anything else will cause the call to fail. Type in the username of ISPDA@CINGULARGPRS.COM and CINGULAR1 for the password. If the first username does not work, try WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM which means your phone is using the WAP gateway at AT&T to connect to the Internet.

IMPORTANT: Don't use the Cingular (or AT&T) Communication Manager to setup the connection. It sets the phone number to *99****1# and sets the Advanced Command string to AT+CDG. Both will cause the tethering to fail.

Now, the connection is not blazing fast, but it's way better than being stuck somewhere with no internet connection. Also, you can perform the above procedure with your phone plugged into the laptop via USB which will keep the phone charged while you're off updating your facebook status. This post was uploaded using the tethered connection and it was plenty fast.

Here's the result of my speed test. As you can see, not blazing. But then the 8125 I'm running is on the old GPRS connection, not the newer faster 3G lines.

There you go, happy surfing!

Infopath and forms

- form is a CAB file with an .XSN extension - Trust levels - Restricted - Domain - Full Trust

- To create forms, Infopath must be installed in designer mode.
- There is a framework from MS for importing Word and Excel documents
- To run forms services, enable both Office SharePoint Server Standard Site features and Office SharePoint Server Enterprise Site features in Site Features. Then, enable the same features under Site Collection Features.

- To force forms to be edited in browser, Advanced settings in the library, display as web page.

- If a form is going to be used in multiple locations, publish it as a content type. Then, when the form is updated, all locations where the form is used will also be updated.

Sharepoint Roll-Up Web Parts

www.bamboosolutions.com

This developer creates web parts for Sharepoint. Some of the more useful parts available include List and Calendar rollup web parts that allow you to display results from sub-sites in a single list.

For example, in the Clients site, a list of all open issues is displayed for all child individual sites.

Useful stuff!

Need to find out if a file is infected by a virus?

Sometimes, you'll find your system acting a little weird. Maybe you've found a service running that you don't recognize. Your virus-scan engine reports and all clear, but you've still got that nagging suspicion.

Why not let 21 different virus engines take a look. Upload your file to Virusscan.jotti.org and let the experts take a peak.

Getting scanned by 21 different programs will either give you peace of mind regarding your system or let you know for sure that it's time for a cleanup.

Jotti can be busy sometimes. If so, here are a few alternates:
